In order to visit the mountain gorillas, one needs to hold a gorilla permit. A gorilla permit currently costs US$600 in Uganda and US$750 in Rwanda.
The cheapest safari you can ever get is close to $ 1300 per person. You can book gorilla permits at the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices in Kamwokya, Kampala or through local tour operators. Though some tourists prefer to contact UWA for the permits directly, it is far easier if you book through a Ugandan tour operator or travel agent. Upon booking your gorilla permit, the tour operator or travel agent can email you a scan of receipt issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority as proof of payment. Please note that gorilla permits are no longer issued by UWA and gorilla permits are digitally uploaded on UWA Cards.
Remember that there are different gorilla groups and in Uganda, you need to get a permit which corresponds to where you will be staying while making your reservation.
What is Included in the Price of the Gorilla Permit?
Each gorilla permit issued allows entry of one person for one trek to a habituated gorilla family. If you need to visit the gorilla permits twice, you will need to book two gorilla permits for corresponding days. The gorilla permit rate is all inclusive – including local service tax, entrance fees and guiding fees for the UWA guides.
Why are Gorilla Permits Expensive?
Though permits look to be expensive, the need to protect these endangered prinmates is much more needed. The charges from the gorilla permits go directly to the government for conservation of not only the gorilla parks but also the different parks that protect Uganda’s wildlife.
When to Book Gorilla Permits
Gorilla permits are limited in number and are sold out first. Therefore you should book your gorilla permits well in advance so that you can have peace of mind. It is troubling if you book your flights, hit the road and reach the park when there is no availability of gorilla permits.
