The Bweza gorilla family is found in the Rushaga Sector. It has 1 silveback and 8 members and can be tracked by tourists in the Rushaga Area, the Southern Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The Bweza Group was part of the Nshongi Group. The Bweza group split from the mother family of Nshongi on the 1st of August, 2012. During this time, park officials were skeptical about announcing the presence of this new group. The rangers reported that the group’s behavior suggested that the group would eventually rejoin the Nshongi group. However, after several months of observation, the group moved on its own. The Uganda Wildlife Authority started making trial visits and the the family became ready for gorilla tracking in December 2012. The process of habituating a new gorilla family typically takes over 2 years. However, since the group broke away from the already habituated Nshongi group, the process was much faster given that they were already used to human prescence into their territory.
The family is made up of 1 Silverback, 3 adult females, 2 juvenile and 3 infants. The Bweza group is an important addition to the community, particularly during the seasons when gorilla permits are hard to find. The Bweza Gorilla Family is an example of another family feud that leads another new gorilla family setting up household in the Rushaga area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
